Halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and 95 miles from Bakersfield, Templeton, CA, is an unincorporated community spanning almost eight square miles in San Luis Obispo County, home to nearly 8,000 residents. The town’s story is one of growth, with a historical foundation built on cattle, fruits, lumber, and charcoal, competing with the railroad’s development. Established in 1886 by the West Coast Land Company, Templeton was originally named Crocker after its vice-president. However, he preferred it to be named after his infant son, Templeton.
As the railroad expanded, so did the town, which featured churches, schools, hotels, grocery stores, blacksmiths, and saloons. The first home in Templeton, built by Chauncey Phillips, is now a bed and breakfast. The first store, once a two-story building, has been reduced to one story, now housing McPhee’s Grill.
